For many consumers, the ability to manage their funds more closely and spend only available funds makes debit card payments preferable to credit card transactions. The possibility for debit card fraud is similar to that of payment by paper checks and ACH (wherein consumers provide a third party with their bank routing transit number and checking or savings account number), although many card issuers now offer debit card users the same zero liability protections provided for credit card transactions.

Wells Fargo Recoups Following Massive Online, ATM Glitch (TechNewsWorld.com)

Wells Fargo said Tuesday it fixed a computer problem that left many of its Web banking customers unable to access their accounts over the weekend. The problems were first discovered Sunday afternoon, and the San Francisco-based bank said all services had been restored as of early Tuesday, though some information, such as account balances, was expected to take longer to be fully brought up to date.

The key element of what most of us know as a credit card is the black line that runs along the reverse side of the card, which is called the magnetic stripe. The magnetic stripe, as its names suggests, contains magnetic ingredients -- small magnetic particles that are embedded in the plastic. The magnetic particles are incredibly tiny, with each less that 20 millionths of an inch in length. What data is stored is based on the orientation of each magnetic particle.
